TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Family and celebrities unveiled a statue honoring Taiwan actress Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛), known as 大S, at Jinbao Mountain (金寶山) on Monday (Feb. 2), marking the first anniversary of her passing. DJ Koo (具俊曄), her South Korean husband, designed the statue that captures her elegance, with long hair, a dress, closed eyes, and her hands on her chest. The unveiling ceremony at the memorial park in New Taipei City took place at 2 p.m.
DJ Koo, along with Dee Hsu (徐熙娣), Barbie’s younger sister and television host, and their mother, revealed the statue by removing a pink canvas. Korean star Choi Si-won (최시원, 崔始源) arrived earlier, nodding to the media before entering. Celebrities including Kevin Tsai (蔡康永), Pace Wu (吳佩慈), Janet Chia (賈永婕), Matilda Tao (陶晶瑩), Rainie Yang (楊丞琳), and Show Lo (羅志祥) attended. Barbie’s mother, visibly emotional, shouted at the statue: “Baby, you’ve been reborn! I love you!”
DJ Koo’s groupmate Kang Won-rae (강원래, 姜元來) from the South Korean duo Clon arrived dressed in black with sunglasses, relying on a wheelchair after a car accident that left him paralyzed. Staff surrounded him, holding umbrellas as DJ Koo hurried over, pushed him into the venue, and greeted him warmly.
The statue stands beside an S-shaped staircase and a cubic monument inscribed with “S,” symbolizing the love story between Barbie Hsu and DJ Koo. DJ Koo, deeply grieving since Barbie’s passing, visits Jinbao Mountain almost every day, placing photos of them together at the site. Barbie’s mother expressed gratitude to media, saying: “Very good. Thank you all for your concern” (很好很好，謝謝大家關心).
Despite the family’s wish for a low-key event, media interest led to security measures around the park, according to Next Apple News (壹蘋新聞網). DJ Koo, who initially planned to leave Taiwan after the unveiling, reportedly decided to stay in Taipei to continue watching over his late wife. ◼
